Recently, I was able to transform my home. I’ve lived in my apartment in Brooklyn for three years. Sometimes, I would stop, open the door to my balcony, and listen to the refrigerator and the traffic noise. Sometimes, I would have on quiet music. Recently, Tyler Wilcox and I performed Antoine Beuger’s un lieu pour être deux, playing long, soft tones in the room. Hearing the tones against the ambient noise drew out the pitches and rhythms, and now I experience the sounds of my home completely differently.
